MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE REGIONAL GOVERNMENT OF MADEIRA

It is with great pleasure and great pride that I salute the celebration of the 165th anniversary of the arrival of the first Madeirans to Trinidad & Tobago.
The Islands of Madeira and Porto Santo generated emigration of its peoples en masse, sending thousands and thousands of their citizens to diverse parts of the world. In their new host nations, these emigrants were able to adapt and evolve, putting down roots and helping those countries to develop and prosper.
Madeirans and their Descendants have never forgotten their Country of origin, the little corner where they were born, where they left behind generations to come, and they have never forgotten the history and memory of their now so far away Island.
Saudade (nostalgia) was always profoundly felt, but the will to progress and succeed in life gave Madeirans the necessary strength so that they could carry out their work and live their lives in their new chosen homes.
In an increasingly globalised world, new technologies are already much sought after by members of the second and third generations eager to learn out about the homeland of their parents and grandparents, thereby bringing Madeira and Porto Santo closer to those who one day hope to visit these Atlantic Isles as vacationing tourists.
So it is with sincere friendship and great respect that I wish all Madeiran Descendants of Trinidad & Tobago great success for the future, welcoming this anniversary celebration, so significant to your historical links to the epic migrations from these Madeira Islands. Best wishes.

É com grande satisfação e orgulho que saúdo a celebração do 165 aniversário da chegada dos primeiros Madeirenses à Trinidad e Tobago.
A Madeira e Porto Santo, ilhas geradoras de grande emigração das suas gentes, colocou em diversas partes do mundo milhares e milhares de pessoas, que nas terras de acolhimento souberam se adaptar e evoluir, criando raõzes e ajudando a desenvolver e a prosperar esses países.
Os Madeirenses e seus Descendentes, nunca esqueceram a sua Terra de origem, o seu cantinho onde nasceram e ao longo dos anos, deixaram às gerações que os sucederam, uma história e uma recordação da sua Ilha lá muito longe.
A saudade sempre falou mais alto, mas a vontade de progredir e de singrar na vida, deram o alento suficiente para que os madeirenses podessem desempenhar o seu trabalho e a sua vida nas terras que procuraram para viver.
Num mundo cada vez mais global, as novas tecnologias são já¡ um meio muito procurado pelas segundas e terceiras gerações, em saber algo sobre a terra dos seus pais e avós, aproximando assim a Madeira e Porto Santo àqueles que ainda, em viagem de turismo, não visitaram estas ilhas do Atlântico.
É pois com grande amizade e consideração que desejo a todos os Descendentes dos Madeirenses de Trinidad e Tobago os melhores êxitos futuros, saudando os festejos desta efeméride tão significativa para o Vosso percurso histórico da epopeia da emigração insular madeirense. Com os melhores cumprimentos.
